Position Description:

The Associate Director, Medical Communications develops, maintains, and applies an appropriate level of disease/therapeutic area/product knowledge to serve as a valuable resource/partner to internal and external stakeholders. The Associate Director, Medical Communications promotes safe and effective use of UCB, Inc. products through timely communication, written and verbal, of scientifically accurate and balanced content related to complex medical and scientific concepts, treatment options, data, and emerging standards of care, as appropriate, for scientific exchange activities with healthcare providers and other UCB, Inc. customers.

Major Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

Medical Information/Scientific Exchange

  • Develops and maintains deep understanding of therapeutic area and product knowledge.
  • Serves as a scientific resource for internal stakeholders.
  • Applies scientific/product knowledge and synthesizes complex data to communicate in understandable and useful formats, written and verbal, to individuals and groups.
  • Responds to unsolicited requests for medical information from HCPs, other external stakeholders.
  • Conducts comprehensive searches and critically evaluates medical and scientific literature.
  • Develops timely written medical information response documents (i.e. standard response letters, Medicaid Summaries, AMCP Formulary Dossiers) that are comprehensive, cohesive, focused on key information relevant to specific request and are consistent with department style guide.
  • Leads database planning and launch activities to ensure an accurate and up-to-date Enclosure and standard response letter repository.
  • Leads daily management of Medical Information mailbox to ensure all escalated spontaneous MI requests are addressed accordingly.
  • Establishes relationships and builds credibility with internal and external customers based on exchange of appropriate scientific, medical and/or product-specific information.
  • Provides support to scientific publications, as appropriate.

Medical Review

  • Provides support and reviews scientific and promotional materials (with medical sign-off) in collaboration with Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory colleagues, for cross-core teams, as needed.

Medical Congresses and Other Activities

  • Engages in the planning and execution of congress activities (e.g., Medical Booth support, Congress Lead, Topic Team Lead, other).
  • Provides support for scientific training activities and collaborates to deliver new hire and advanced presentations on disease state and product clinical data.
  • Leads planning and execution of Medical Communications Initiatives
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to legal and regulatory issues that affect industry-based medical affairs practice
  • Manages vendor relationships, as appropriate.
  • Operates at the highest level of UCB compliance and professional standards. Compliance is a part of how we operate within UCB. Adherence to compliant behavior is an expectation at UCB and demonstrated by embracing ethical decision-making practices and guidelines in all aspects of our organization.
  • Participates in other projects/duties as assigned

Interested? For this position you'll need the following education, experience and skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate (M.D., PharmD., or Ph.D. in scientifically relevant field) is required.
  • 3+ years of Medical Affairs experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Strong business acumen with a solid understanding of pharmaceutical industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant therapeutic area (rheumatology, gastroenterology, dermatology, or general immunology) experience strongly preferred. Product launch experience also preferred.
  • Excellent medical writing skills and the ability to analyze/interpret, understand, and summarize highly complex scientific data.
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proficient use of English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Proficient literature searching skills.
  • Able to lead projects with a proactive and collaborative approach toward problem solving
  • Ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts in 1:1 and group settings.
  • Demonstrates high level of accountability to deliver superior content in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and reference management software.
  • Must complete initial training and successfully pass all assessments.

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional overnight travel, up to 20%, required.
