About the Department
The Gerontology Institute at Georgia State University just celebrated its 50th anniversary. Founded in 1973, the Gerontology Institute offers a Bachelor's of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) with a concentration in Gerontology, an Undergraduate Certificate in Gerontology, a Master's of Arts in Gerontology, a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology, and a new Leadership and Aging Graduate Certificate. The Gerontology Institute prides itself on serving its student body by advancing innovative teaching, rigorous research and community engagement.
Position Description
The Gerontology Institute at Georgia State University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position to begin Fall 2024. At Georgia State, Lecturers are full-time faculty who are eligible for promotion to Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer. A Lecturer's workload includes teaching four classes each semester (80%) and service (20%) and they are full members of the faculty. Lecturers meet a broad array of responsibilities such as teaching core courses, directing undergraduate programs, leading study abroad trips, and developing innovative experiential learning courses. Lecturers engage in service activities within the Institute and university, including participation in faculty meetings, committees, and other relevant service roles. Georgia State is an institutional member of the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity, and the College of Arts & Sciences supports professional success for all faculty through mentoring programs and representation of faculty from all ranks (including Lecturers) in college-level program development.
Required Experience
Required Education
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Gerontology or a related field (e.g., Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work) with a specialization in aging.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
Successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach courses on aging at the undergraduate and graduate (Master's) level; the ability to connect students with the broader aging network; and a commitment to creating a welcoming environment for students from many backgrounds and interests. Additionally, successful candidates will demonstrate the capacity for integrating technology in the classroom. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in one or more of the following: dementia, diversity and aging, and death, dying, and loss. Preference will be given to applicants who can teach some combination of the following classes: Introduction to Gerontology, Diversity and Aging, Dementia, Health and the Older Adult, Death, Dying and Loss and Psychology of Aging.
