Technical Writer

Capital One is seeking a technical writer to join the team tasked with documenting the business-critical DevOps tools and the SDLC and security processes that support development work across the enterprise. The work of this team is critical to empowering our internal developers to build reliable, secure products that serve tens of millions of consumers.

At Capital One, we think big and do big things. We are a Top-10 bank by deposits, a high-tech company, a scientific laboratory, and a nationally-recognized brand (what's in your wallet?) all rolled into one. Capital One is committed to building great technology, and this is a high-impact role that will help move the business forward.

The right candidates will have a love of technology, a genuine ability to use language as a tool, and deeply technical experience as a tech writer. They'll also be strong grammarians who understand how sentence structure and word choice can clarify or obscure meaning. Juggling multiple projects and driving their successful and timely completion is their forte. They welcome technical challenges, and are fanatically focused on great user experience.

Preferred candidates will have experience in a software development environment and a deep familiarity with the SDLC, a passing acquaintance with one or more programming languages (Java, Python, Ruby, Angular ... take your pick), a comfortable working knowledge of command-line interfaces and general file management, configuration, and source control practices, and some experience working in an Agile environment. Ideal candidates will have all of the above PLUS some experience documenting developer-facing tools.

Your job will be to join the team in producing gold-standard technical documentation that smooths the DevOps path for developers as they build and maintain their applications. You will work across teams and technical and product verticals. You're open to new and modern ways of constructing and delivering content, and maniacally focused on serving user needs. You're also passionate about quality and ready to do what it takes to achieve it.

Above all, you're a passionate user advocate who tirelessly champions the requirement that we be of service to our users.

What You'll Bring:

  • Excellent writing skills: a true facility with the language, a good sense of how to break complex topics into easier-to-understand elements, and a strong ability to teach using the written word. Ability to write tight, easy-to-read guidance that adds nothing extra and leaves nothing out, and reads like a conversation.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to achieve consensus, resolve inconsistencies, and keep things moving.

  • Ability to work accurately and completely in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and changeable priorities

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or military experience

  • At least 3 years of technical writing experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of technical writing experience

  • 1 year of experience in a financial services industry

  • 1 year of experience working in an Agile environment
