Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Client services: phone intakes, determination of eligibility for protective orders under Georgia law, in-person interviews, document drafting and filing, ex parte hearings, case investigation, obtaining admissible evidence, interviewing witnesses, hearing preparation, courtroom representation, follow-up as applicable, referrals to community resources as applicable

Community Outreach: The Intern will network and collaborate with community service providers, prosecutors, defense attorneys (public defenders and private bar), law enforcement, court personnel, and others in the course of representing clients in protective order hearings. Additionally, the Intern will develop and deliver trainings and other presentations on domestic violence to community groups and law enforcement.

Position Summary

The Law Intern program at the University of Georgia School of Law Jane W. Wilson Family Justice Clinic is a client services, research, and community outreach position. Interns will be involved with all parts of the protective order process from intake/client screening to final court hearings. Interns will also support the Clinic Director in all aspects of Clinic work including providing advice and referrals, collaboration with community service partners, and community outreach. Eligible students can be certified under the Student Practice Act to represent clients in court under the supervision of the Clinic Director.

A background investigation will be expected as part of the hiring process.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
-At least one year completed and in good academic standing at an ABA-accredited law school. 
-Interest in working with victims of domestic violence and stalking. 
-Interest in domestic violence law, family / domestic relations law, or related fields.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

-Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
-Work effectively with a diverse client population
