SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Impact. We make one. Our attorneys and staff are deeply committed to making positive, lasting change in our communities. We understand that the strategic combination of the various aspects of our IMPACT initiative -- community leadership, pro bono, volunteerism, diversity and sustainability -- can create a powerful ripple effect in the communities in which we work and live. Functioning together, these elements enable us to more fully engage in the community and produce positive change one life, one project, one commitment at a time.

Community Leadership

Nonprofit organizations are the fabric of our communities. To thrive, they need strong leadership. Kilpatrick Townsend lawyers serve on scores of nonprofit boards and are purposefully dedicated to ensuring that goals and objectives are met, lives are changed, impacts are made.

Pro Bono

Since the formalization of our Pro Bono Program in 2001, thousands of individuals and hundreds of community organizations have benefitted from the pro bono representation of our attorneys. This totals over 250,000 hours of time, a value of over $74 million.

Volunteerism

There are 525,600 minutes in a year and we strive to make each one count. Through our award-winning volunteer program, attorneys and staff have the opportunity to serve their community and make an IMPACT. In 2009, over 45% of the firm volunteered in at least one of the more than 60 projects we organized and collectively we made over 11,400 sandwiches for the homeless, donated enough school supplies to fill 258 shopping carts and mentored more than 120 students, just to name a few of the highlights.

DIVERSITY

The firm's commitment to diversity as a core value leads us to pursue initiatives that make every aspect of our work environment more open and fulfilling for everyone. We have adopted as our guiding principle the following statement about what diversity means to us, which we refer to as the Kilpatrick Townsend diversity principle:

"At Kilpatrick Townsend, all persons, without regard to differences among them that do not matter in the workplace, shall be respected and valued fully, so that each person may maximize his or her potential to contribute to the common good of our firm and to benefit fairly from doing so."

Our Legacy

Kilpatrick Townsend has a 135-year history of leadership in inclusiveness—hiring and promoting diverse attorneys and staff and fostering an environment in which the best legal minds can thrive. It's one of the most important elements of our legacy, and it has contributed directly to our firm's success.

Kilpatrick Townsend:
  • was one of the first large firms in the Southeast to have a female partner;
  • led the major regional law firms in recruiting and hiring African-American attorneys
  • was the first AmLaw 100 firm headquartered in the South to have a female co-managing partner;
  • represented Martin Luther King, Sr. when the IRS unfairly targeted his church in the 1960s; and
  • provided pro bono counsel to Atlanta's first black mayor Maynard Jackson's mayoral re-election campaign in 1989.
For us, diversity in our workplace is about action and continually seeking better ways to empower and energize our diverse personnel for success. Their individual successes enhance both our ability to provide world-class services to clients and our collective and individual contributions to the strength and vitality of the communities in which we work and live.

Our Vision and Values

Commitment is the foundation of a successful effort to build and maintain a diverse and inclusive environment. We are working to attract the widest possible pool of top talent; provide opportunities for all attorneys and staff to maximize their potential and fully contribute to accomplishing our firm's mission, and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Promoting diversity and its social imperative for fair treatment in our workplace without regard to racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation and other self-defining factors is a core value of the firm – a part of the fabric for our institutional life. We recognize both the social responsibility and the business opportunity of promoting diversity. It is the right thing to do, and it is good for business.

SUSTAINABILITY

Kilpatrick Townsend continues to be at the forefront of issues impacting the world in which we live. A more green, sustainable workplace uses less energy, creates less waste and creates a culture where employees know that they are making a difference every day.

In 2008, the firm launched the "Keeping Sustainable @ Kilpatrick Townsend" initiative which incorporates a holistic commitment not only to the environment but to the firm's community involvement, pro bono and diversity initiatives.

As a centerpiece to the firm's sustainability initiative, we have become a signatory to the ABA/EPA Law Office Climate Challenge. We were the first in many of our office cities to sign on to this robust environmental policy. The ABA/EPA requires signatories to commit to only two of the three components of the Climate Challenge. We are one of only a few firms across the country to commit to all three components of the Climate Challenge, and we have done so at the Leader Level.

  • The Energy Star Program involves reducing the firm's electricity usage by 10%.
  • The Green Power Partnership Program involves the firm purchasing Renewable Energy Credits. The funds committed go to support alternative energy solutions such as wind power, solar power, and geothermal power. This will also help offset the firm's carbon footprint. To qualify as a "Partner" in the program the purchase of 30% RECs is required; to qualify as a "Leader" the purchase of 60% is required. The firm purchased 100% RECs.
  • The WasteWise Program has two components. The first involves the firm purchasing materials such as copy/printer paper, letterhead, bond paper, envelopes, paper plates, and other supplies that have a much higher recycled content (at least 30%). The second component involves recycling a high percentage of the waste the firm creates such as mixed office paper, colored paper, and other office supplies such as file folders and envelopes.
  • The firm also has the distinction of being the first law firm to join the Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia Program, a voluntary environmental leadership initiative sponsored by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. The firm commited to participate at the Gold Level.

Our Commitment

We are proud of the great strides we have made since the launch of our ambitious initiative, and we are strongly committed not only to do our part in creating a more sustainable environment but to become a model in the legal industry as firms work to create more sustainable workplaces. Since we launched this initiative, the firm has met its obligations in the following ways:

  • All styrofoam cups and plates were replaced with recycled paper products.
  • All plastic eating utensils have been replaced with items made from natural, biodegradable materials.
  • All employees have been given re-usable mugs (one for hot drinks and one for cold drinks).
  • The firm has purchased 100% organic, eco-friendly tote bags (for grocery shopping, etc.) which are being given out both internally and externally as promotional items at events.
  • Trash receptacles are available throughout the firm for recycling paper products.
  • The firm now uses copy/printer paper, and almost all other paper products, with 35% recycled content.
  • All of the firm's copiers had the default changed to "two-sided" (duplex).
  • In offices across the firm where we have control of lighting, we have converted light bulbs from high to low energy. In offices where we lease office space, we are working with the building owners to conserve energy by modifying lighting.
  • The firm's Atlanta office is located in a LEED certified building.
