GDS Associates, Inc. has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Project Engineer in the Transmission Services - Energy Delivery Department. This position is fully remote and based out of the Marietta (Atlanta), GA office. The main responsibilities are listed below.

  • Modify regional power flow, short circuit and stability models including transmission topology and generation additions/retirements for power system analysis.
  • Develop and verify power system models for generation additions using vendor-supplied and client-supplied information in accordance with regional interconnection requirements.
  • Perform transmission system studies using industry-accepted software tools (PSS/E, PSLF) to assess system performance, compliance with NERC transmission planning standards, generator interconnection and deliverability feasibility, and impacts of regional expansion plans on load and generation clients.
  • Provide technical support to evaluate compliance with NERC and regional standards relative to transmission system modeling and planning, including reviewing evidence for compliance and making recommendations for changes in policies and guidelines to comply with NERC and regional criteria.
  • Assist clients with development of strategies and processes to identify and evaluate potential transmission expansion opportunities to improve client strategic goals such as reducing transmission losses, reducing system congestion and improving GDS clients' operation.
  • Represent GDS clients throughout the entire planning process associated with the interconnection of transmission, load and generation facilities.
  • Support other GDS departments by providing engineering expertise needed for generation RFP evaluation, integrated resource planning, transmission project need determination, utility rate filings, and system losses filings at state utility commissions and FERC.
  • Serve as a technical liaison with the RTO/ISO by supporting asset registration and qualification, facilities performance review, power flow modeling support and other activities as needed.
  • Represent GDS clients at RTO/ISO stakeholder workgroups, through active monitoring of changes that could impact clients, development of client strategies to serve client goals including making recommendations relative to various planning, and reliability efforts employed at the regional level.

Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology required. Electrical Engineering or Power Engineering focus preferred [Degree must be from an ABET (Accreditation for Engineering and Technology) certified school]
  • Five years of relevant transmission planning, transmission policy, system operations, or generation/transmission modeling work experience.
  • Experience with power system modeling and software tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, PSS/MUST, TARA, and similar software programs. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated PSS/E or PSLF experience.
  • Familiarity with interconnection and planning requirements in ERCOT, WECC, CAISO, PJM, NYISO, ISO-NE is preferred. Familiarity with interconnection and planning requirements in SPP, MISO, and non-RTO/ISO regions a strongly preferred.
  • Able to read and interpret electrical distribution and transmission one-lines, equipment specifications.
  • Able to conduct and interpret results of steady-state power-flow studies with minimal supervision/direction. Experience with short-circuit and transient stability studies is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of NERC reliability standards for transmission planning, facility ratings, and facility modeling preferred.
  • Transmission planning experience on bulk power systems is required. Electrical utility background in planning or system operations is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and able to work on multiple projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interpret findings and share consolidated results with stakeholders is preferred.
  • Proficient in computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
  • Domestic travel of up to 10%.
