About the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) is highly interdisciplinary and covers broadly all fields of Earth and space science. EAS hosts a range of undergraduate degrees, including B.S. programs in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS), Solid Earth and Planetary Sciences (SEP), and Environmental Science (ENVS), and hosts a distinct interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Ocean Science and Engineering in collaboration with the School of Biological Sciences and Environmental Engineering. Job Summary

The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) invites applications for one full-time Postdoctoral Researcher position in the area of Seafloor Geodesy. The position will be in support of a collaborative research project that will test the implementation of GNSS-Acoustic methods for use in deepwater applications near a subduction zone trench. The applicant will work with a collaborative local and remote team of scientists to deploy instruments off-shore Alaska (summer 2024), make and interpret recurring field measurements using a newly acquired autonomous Wave Glider, reduce data to determine the effects of extreme depth (up to 6 km under water), steep seafloor gradients, and differential geometries have on the repeatability of measurements. The successful applicant will be aiding the development of needed methods for understanding fault behavior far offshore in a region known for past excitation of large tsunamis. The position is for up to 30 months of salary, with a preferred start date in the first half of 2024.

Responsibilities
  • Support deployment of seafloor instrumentation offshore Alaska.
  • Run and modify nascent software for processing GNSS and ocean acoustic signals for precise positioning.
  • Critically analyze results assessments of repeatability, including identifying outliers, important trends and relationships.
  • Report out on research in presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

Required Qualifications

PhD or equivalent specializing in Terrestrial or Marine Geodesy or Geophysics at time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidate will have experience in the following:

  • Experience with digital signal processing.
  • Proficiency in scientific computing and software development.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publication area of specialization.
  • Ability to excel in a collaborative research environment.

Additional Preferred Qualifications include:

  • PhD or equivalent specializing in Terrestrial or Marine Geodesy or Geophysics at time of appointment.
  • Familiarity with the Linux OS, use of GitHub, and Intermediate or higher experience in programming in Python.
  • Understanding of acoustic or seismic structure and wave propagation.
