Job Description
PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE in VIRTUAL PRODUCTION/VISUAL EFFECTS – Log #24-094

The Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII) at Georgia State University in Atlanta invites applications for a Professor of Practice in Virtual Production and Visual Effects to start in August 2023. We seek an individual with a thorough understanding and record of achievement in virtual production, broadly defined (e.g., experience in emerging technology pipelines, potentially including a close working knowledge of software specific to virtual production pipelines in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), LED technology, motion and volumetric capture, visual effects, game engine VFX, previsualization, and animation).

QUALIFICATIONS: Position requires a minimum of 15 years of industry experience, and we require candidates to hold an advanced/graduate degree in a creative or media field. The main duties include (1) a priority on working with colleagues to attract industrial collaborations and revenue-generating work to the Institute; (2) teaching in area of experience. Because of the expectation that Professors of Practice will remain engaged with content creation industries, CMII requires them to engage in commercially viable projects that include student participation, projects managed by the Institute Executive Director. Applicants must therefore have a thorough understanding of the creative and production pipeline in their sector of experience. For example, a candidate able to problem-solve where gaming platforms (e.g., Unreal and Unity) must be integrated with VFX and LED screen technologies, would receive preference.

Preference will be given to candidates who have classroom or corporate training teaching experience and a demonstrated passion for working with undergraduate and graduate students with technology interests. Other potential work might include the supervision of student led projects, industry collaborations connected to the business of production and production pipelines, and active involvement in ongoing CMII administrative work. Candidates with a high degree of familiarity with some of the leading content creation software packages and production finance will be preferred.

Professors of Practice at Georgia State University connect nonprofit or corporate practitioners and accomplished executives to the more traditional academic work of a Research 1 university, including classroom instruction. Professors of Practice hired through the mechanism of a national search may be annually renewed in perpetuity given effective performance and are eligible for annual merit pay raises as made available by the Georgia Assembly and the university. This configuration enables CMII to attract exceptionally strong teachers and administrators who often bring extensive professional experience in the media and content creation industries, and to mentor new colleagues into classroom and student mentoring excellence.

CMII operates an advanced technology content creation center and offers undergraduate bachelor (BA/BS) degree programs in Game Design & Development and a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) in Media Entrepreneurship, as well as an MFA concentration in Virtual Production launching in Fall 2022. CMII employs research and teaching faculty, as well as industry-experienced Professors of Practice. CMII is an interdisciplinary unit in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of the Arts, created to develop 21st century storytellers prepared for work in the media and arts industries, to mentor students interested in entrepreneurship, and to develop research-connected industry partnerships.

As you are required to stay active in the industry, all Professors of Practice are required to engage in commercially viable projects that include student participation upon the direction of the Executive Director.

Georgia State University (est. 1913) is a Research Institution enrolling more than 53,000 undergraduate and graduate students in eleven colleges and schools and is the largest university in Georgia. Students are enrolled from every Georgia county, every state in the nation and more than 160 nations and territories. The university is proud of the very rich diversity of its students (the university, e.g., annually graduates more African American students than any other American higher education institution).

To apply, send a letter of application, professional resume or academic vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and three letters of recommendation to Professor of Practice Search/VIRTUAL PRODUCTION, Creative Media Industries Institute, P.O. Box 5060, Georgia State University, Atlanta, Ga., 30302-5060, or email materials to cmiifacultysearch@gsu.edu.

Position open until filled, with first review of files starting on October 20th, 2023. An offer of employment will be conditional upon background verification.

Georgia State University is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
