The Anesthesia/Surgery Equipment Specialist has responsibility for the proper operation and maintenance of various equipment, which is used for anesthetizing patients in connection with general surgery or pain management. This primarily includes anesthesia machines, vaporizers, anesthesia ventilators and anesthetic gas monitoring instrumentation. He/she may also maintain related equipment such as patient monitoring, oxygen analyzers. Duties include not only repair of these items, but also the supervision of service vendors in the surgical departments, as well as the performance of scheduled maintenance. This is a senior-level engineer, but may have as little as 2 years of experience in the service of anesthesia modalities. He/She is able to suggest improvements to the workflows and equipment usage to facilitate increased safety, productivity, or improved working conditions. The Anesthesia/Surgery Equipment Specialist is expected to work independently, able to respond to any calls in any surgical department, whether in his/her specific areas of expertise or not, because of intense general training, customer service skills, general knowledge of all anesthetizing and surgical, and the knowledge of safety in all areas. Additionally, he or she is experienced enough to know when to call for help and will not overstep his/her abilities.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assures the proper maintenance of anesthetizing and general surgery equipment in the hospital, or located at a hospital site. This includes warranty, leased, and loaner equipment.
  • Assists in the management of parts stock, assuring adequate, but not excessive parts and supplies stock.
  • Repairs anesthetizing equipment to manufacturer's original specifications.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance on a wide variety of surgery and anesthesia equipment.
  • Performs Clinical Support related to the operation and safe use of anesthetizing and surgical equipment.
  • Manages the Waste Anesthetic Gas Monitoring Program.
  • Performs incoming inspection of newly received anesthesia and surgery equipment, completing necessary paperwork to enter item into computer system, assign maintenance procedures, and document his/her time and activities.
  • Participates in a hospital-wide after-hours on-call rotation.
  • Suggests operational improvements to anesthesia and surgery equipment usage.
  • Orders repair parts and supplies, as needed.
  • Provides in-service education to clinicians, technologists and operators regarding equipment use and safety.
  • Coordinates and oversees the activities of outside service vendors.
  • Assists in, or performs incident investigations.
  • Performs design modifications of anesthesia and surgery equipment, as approved by manufacturers or Department Director.
  • Assists more senior technicians in a wide variety of duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains a helpful / professional attitude toward hospital staff, patients, physicians or other clients.
  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions or employee/patient/visitor injury to Manager.
  • Demonstrates service excellence behaviors routinely in encounters with all customers, i.e., co-workers, nurses, clinicians, patients, visitors, physicians, auxilians, etc.
  • Participates in general BioMedical responsibilities as time permits.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

  1. Electronic fundamentals, including basic electricity - DC and AC, Active devices, Transducers, Digital devices, Microprocessors, Troubleshooting techniques, and Electrical Safety in Healthcare.
  2. One to ten (1 - 10) years experience working in BioMedical Engineering as a repair technician. Experience may be general in nature, or may reflect specialization in a particular aspect of medical equipment.
  3. Ability to work with people, resolve conflicts, and motivate staff is required.
  4. Outstanding customer service skills are required.
  5. Written communication skills a must.
  6. Oral presentation skills required.
  7. Ability to take complex issues and distills the main issues and explains succinctly to others.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED

  1. Up to 15 years experience working in a hospital setting, either in BioMedical Engineering.
  2. Associates or Bachelors degree in Engineering preferred. May be replaced by completion of U.S. Military biomedical training.
  3. ICC certification as a CBET is preferred.
