Project/Unit Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Systems Engineering Research Division (SERD) is currently seeking a Model-Based Systems Engineer for a full time research faculty position in the Enterprise and Open Systems Architecture (EOSA) Branch. The EOSA Branch authors, analyzes, and integrates enterprise and open system architectures to support our research sponsors across systems engineering activities.

This position supports the Department of Defense (DoD) in its digital transformation to realize, manage, and improve enterprise and open systems. Candidates will be responsible for using Object Management Group (OMG) Systems Modeling Language (SysML) tools (MagicDraw, Cameo Systems Modeler, Enterprise Architect, Rational Rhapsody, etc.) to author SysML models.

SERD's primary location is in Smyrna, GA (15 miles northwest of Atlanta) but has researchers located at various GTRI field offices across the country. GTRI field offices provide the opportunity for a physical presence close to our sponsors, maintaining the ability to leverage the researcher base primarily located in the Atlanta metropolitan area. SERD offers a hybrid work environment where employees are in the office 3 days a week with an option to work remotely up to 2 days a week, with coordination and approval from their supervisor and depending on project requirements. For this position, the primary location is Smyrna, GA but candidates interested in being stationed at any of the following GTRI field office locations will also be considered.

Job Purpose

The Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) develops and executes novel system model-based approaches to define, design, analyze, and document system development. The MBSE Researcher applies MBSE tool suites to enable the use of model-based best practices in DoD acquisition and system life cycle support. This position supports stakeholders and sponsors in the application of MBSE to trade space analysis, design, acquisition, and sustainment. The MBSE executes System Engineering and MBSE processes including system definition, functional decomposition, requirements development, architectural development and analysis, design synthesis, system analysis, data modeling and architecture development, test program development, and sustainment activities. The MBSE researcher also presents technical and program management presentations to government sponsors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create product or system definitions and conduct initial requirements analysis
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes
  • Author UAF models capturing stakeholder needs and resulting enterprise architectures
  • Author SysML models capturing system requirements and design
  • Author data models capturing system data requirements and design
  • Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements
  • Interface with and learn how to work with disparate engineering teams for technical tasking
Additional Responsibilities
  • Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering methods to support the DoD's digital transformation of enterprise and open systems
  • Support Team and Task Leads in advising customer's on how MBSE interfaces with their architectural efforts
  • Support MBSE Business Development
  • Lead small to mid-sized technical tasks and/or teams
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Exposure to an Object Management Group (OMG) Systems Modeling Language (SysML) authoring tool (MagicDraw, Cameo Systems Modeler, Enterprise Architect, Rational Rhapsody, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Familiarity with the DoD Acquisition Process (DoD 5000) and Modular Open Systems Approach
  • Experience with requirements development and management
  • Knowledge of Systems, Aerospace, Automotive, and/or Industrial Engineering
  • Familiarity with the DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) or Unified Architecture Framework (UAF)
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to non-technical audiences
  • Experience with Object Oriented Programming and/or modeling and simulation.
