About the Center for Advanced Communications Policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The Center for Advanced Communications Policy (CACP) focuses on key issues that influence the development, implementation and adoption of cutting-edge, advanced communications technologies. CACP work includes assessment of policy issues and production of regulatory filings, identification of future options for innovation, and articulation of a clearer vision of the ever-changing technology landscape. Center research areas include wireless communications and platforms; accessible technology design and use for people with disabilities; emergency alerts and communications; higher education policy and evaluation; workforce development and employment for people with disabilities; new communications modes such as social media and online participatory platforms; STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, and the cultural impact of technology shifts. CACP, in its role as an objective and neutral source, collaborates with government, industry and academia at the national, local, state, and international levels. Job Summary

The position will be responsible for contributing to human factors research, execution of human systems research, development of protocols for usability testing, conduction of ethnographic research in HomeLab, and participation in multi-disciplinary design teams. Research activities range from foundational social science research, providing evidence-based input for policy formation and regulatory filings, to an applied policy research analysis and innovation studies to inform the development, implementation and adoption of a wide range of information and communication technologies. Lab-based studies focus on the intersection of technology and the user: accessibility and usability studies, user testing and human factors analysis, all of which help industry better understand the needs of a wide range of users, especially people with disabilities, the aging, and other vulnerable populations. Training and outreach efforts are designed to increase social awareness, disseminate best practices, and facilitate collaboration between critical stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

  • Gather data from subject matter experts.
  • Identify and derive human performance-based design requirements.
  • Contribute to the design of software and hardware.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Develop human engineering test plans.
  • Perform both checklist evaluations and user- in-the-loop testing including user testing with people with functional limitations due to age or disability.
  • Contribute to publications, presentations, and other research and creative scholarship activities.

Required Qualifications
  • A Master's degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master's degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree
