About The School of Mathematics at Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Mathematics faculty instructs students from across campus, including undergraduate and graduate students. Its faculty carry out research in a wide variety of Mathematical Sciences. Expertise in the School in mathematical biology includes, immunology, microbial dynamics, several areas at the interface of molecular biology and discrete mathematics, disease transmission, biological networks, mathematical neuroscience, bioinformatics and statistical methods in biology, and aggregation dynamics. The leadership for the NSF-Simons Center, The Southeast Center for Mathematics and Biology - is in the School of Math at Georgia Tech. Furthermore, the School is a key partner in several programs at Georgia Tech, including PhD programs in Bioinformatics, Quantitative Biosciences, Biostatistics, as well as Algorithms, Computation and Optimization, Computational Science and Engineering, and Machine Learning. Georgia Tech has a variety of complementary strengths, including biomedical engineering, neuroscience, biochemistry, and data analysis in the life sciences. The School plays leadership roles in TRIAD, the cross-disciplinary NSF-funded center in data science, and the NSF-funded research training hub in Geometry and Topology (GTGT).

Job Summary

The School of Mathematics in the College of Sciences invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track instructional faculty position in the Academic Professional career track. Applicants will be considered at the Academic Professional and Senior Academic Professional ranks with specialized experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching, with clear potential for taking on considerable responsibility in teaching, educational leadership, and administrative tasks. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students.

The successful candidate will be responsible for undergraduate academic advisement, course and curriculum development, and mentorship of teaching assistants. The faculty member will also teach four (4) courses annually in the undergraduate curriculum. Ideal candidates should have experience and an interest in innovative undergraduate instruction. Candidates will possess attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work well with faculty, staff, students, as well as the broader university community. Experience with technology in teaching, high quality delivery of online courses, and administration will be considered a plus. One or more years of experience in a university environment, and a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field, such as physics or computer science, is required for this position. This position is a renewable, 12-month appointment in the Academic Professional career track. Academic Professional Faculty at Georgia Tech are non-tenure track, academic faculty with a well-defined promotion path.

Responsibilities

This position responsibilities may include administrative support for undergraduate and/or graduate teaching, in the form of advising, scheduling, course coordination, curation of materials, facilitation of use of technology for both in-person and online courses, and/or support for curriculum improvements. The faculty member will manage course creation, content, pedagogical approach, and delivery in their subject-matter expertise in areas of coursework. As part of this curriculum management, the faculty member will teach four (4) courses per year distributed across the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. This instruction will likely include support for integration of technology in courses, administration, assessment, and innovative curricula; oversight and delivery of online courses; coordination with faculty on delivery of course tracking and collecting data in support of School programs; support for curriculum development and use of innovative teaching techniques.

Required Qualifications

For all ranks, one or more years of experience in a university environment, and a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field, such as physics or computer science, is required for this position.

Academic Professional

  • Significant related experience or promotion from the rank of Associate Academic Professional (or equivalent); Quality of performance and potential development must be recognized by peers.

Senior Academic Professional

  • Evidence of superior performance in the chosen field; Recognition by peers (whether national, regional, or local); Successful and measurable related experience; Five (5) years or more as an Academic Professional (or equivalent).

In addition to addressing teaching and administrative experience, the applicant should be experienced with technology in teaching and participation in outreach activities, and possess:

  • The ability to teach and mentor a diverse student body.
  • The ability to promote an inclusive and welcoming educational/work environment.
  • Expertise in teaching, scholarship, and/or service that contributes to access, diversity, and equal opportunity in higher education.
