About the School of History and Sociology (HSOC)

The School of History and Sociology (HSOC) is a uniquely interdisciplinary unit with an intellectual culture of cross-pollination between sociological and historical scholarship, as well as work in science and technology studies. HSOC offers a Bachelor of Science degree in History, Technology, and Society and several joint undergraduate minors including Social Justice; Women, Science, and Technology; Health, Medicine, and Society; Science, Technology, and Society; and Sports, Society, and Technology. At the graduate level, HSOC offers master's and doctoral degrees in the History and Sociology of Technology and Science. HSOC is one of six schools in Georgia Tech's Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. Job Summary

The School of History and Sociology () at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the history of the African Diaspora. The chronological specialty is open; however, we welcome scholarship that focuses on the period prior to the 20th century, treating the African diaspora in North, South or Central America, Africa, Europe, or Asia. This hire could align with existing faculty strengths in African American history, activism and politics, and/or urban studies. We are seeking a colleague who can support our further growth in Black Studies and who could aid in the development of new courses, as well as strengthen existing courses.

The appointment will begin on August 1, 2024.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program; to pursue external funding to support research; to teach courses that contribute to the undergraduate and graduate degrees, minors, and certificate programs offered in the School of History and Sociology; and to engage in professional service commensurate with career stage at and beyond Georgia Tech.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. in History or a related field at the time of appointment is required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a robust and innovative research agenda in areas that build on the strengths of the School of History and Sociology as well as an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students.
