Mott MacDonald is currently seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, and experienced Senior Railroad Project Engineer interested in supporting the development and growth of the rail market for Mott MacDonald, as well as developing new and managing existing client relationships. The candidate will direct project team members in the planning, design and construction of freight, intercity and commuter passenger rail and other transportation infrastructure projects as required. These projects may include mainline freight track capacity, rail yard and terminal improvements, including on-port rail facilities, as well as intercity passenger rail improvements such as Amtrak or commuter rail operations that share track with freight.
A key part of the role will be to support the delivery of small to large-scale infrastructure engineering projects across the Southeastern United States and North America, within a collaborative and supportive work environment.

As the Senior Railroad Project Engineer, working as an integral part of Mott MacDonald, duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Developing new and managing existing client relationships as well as interfacing with clients on proposals and project related issues.
  • Formulating and developing long range goals and objectives for specific market sectors, coordinating, and expediting activities to attain these goals and objectives.
  • Growing external relationships and building and maintaining strong networks with key clients, business partners and competitors, driving joint initiatives where appropriate and using these networks to influence, close deals and impact the growth and direction of the business.
  • Development of new opportunities with railroad owners and operators including the support of public projects being administered by the various railroads across the Central and Southern United States.
  • Support project opportunities being pursued by state departments of transportation and other public agencies making rail capital investments.
  • Providing support to business development activities and strategic initiatives, including the leading and preparation of proposals.
  • Acting as a role model and ambassador for Mott MacDonald, articulating and representing the brand, vision, and value proposition internally and externally.
  • Active participation in AREMA and related technical committee work.
  • Ability to cross-sell and collaborate with related services including but not limited to transport planning, civil, structural, systems, tunnels, and ports.

As well as those duties that directly support the growth of the rail business, the ideal candidate will have experience in delivering and managing rail transportation projects with the ability to fulfil or as a minimum, support the following duties:

  • Engagement with Mott MacDonald's North American Rail Practice including support to projects as needed.
  • Leading, mentoring, and supporting the development of technical staff.
  • Providing leadership in compiling quality deliverables of preliminary and detail design documents for transportation projects.
  • Providingtechnical oversight, review, and guidance in the design of mainline and siding track alignments, special trackwork, rail yards and other rail transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams, nurturing an innovative, challenging, collaborative and high performing work environment, which supports and fosters the Mott MacDonald values and culture where results are driven by a total team effort.

The ideal candidate will have experience in infrastructure and transportation market segments and possess the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering; Post-Secondary education is considered an asset
  • Registered professional engineer (NCEES registration preferred)
  • A minimum of 10 years of engineering experience, including project management proficiency
  • 5 years of industry experience on rail projects and track/civil design with a preference for working knowledge of Class I, short line and regional railroads
  • Competence with railroad industry standards, specifications, practices, and regulations.
  • Ability to network within a large organization to bring the best solutions to our clients.
  • Management experience of both large projects and teams, for the total delivery of projects from their inception to construction completion and operation.
  • Preference for experience managing financial aspects of contracts (fee payment, subcontractors, income/expenses, etc.) to protect company's interest and simultaneously maintaining good relationship with clients.
  • Self-directed nature, with ability to work well / seamlessly with a larger team, including outside experts (e.g., financial, legal, regulatory, etc.)
