Qualifications * Knowledge of basic math and communication skills typically acquired through graduation from high school; knowledge of basic maintenance and operation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing system maintenance and repair; Ability to perform tasks under adverse weather conditions, ability to perform safety-sensitive functions in accordance with federal and state requirements; knowledge of machinery, sill in reading and following blueprints and safety instructions; skill in using hand and power tools; ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors and the general public; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing * High school diploma, trade school education or equivalent * Two years of experience in parks, buildings, and grounds maintenance and construction or related field * Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position may be substituted * Must cooperate fully for all weather and department-related emergencies, which may require being on-call or responding after regular work hours; * May be required to assist with special event support during evenings or weekends; * Valid Illinois Driver's License * Satisfactory background check and motor vehicle report * Physical Requirements and Work Environment * Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus | Responsibilities * Definition and Purpose: Under the direction of the Superintendent of Parks, Buildings and Grounds, the Maintenance Worker I for Buildings and Grounds operates, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains lighting systems, HVAC systems, repairs and installs electrical systems, repairs and installs plumbing fixtures and assists other departments with projects related to the above-listed skills * This position also serves as the Certified Pool Operator and maintains the swimming pool mechanical rooms, chemical controllers and all other operations for the pool * Performs semi-skilled and manual work involving building maintenance, minor carpentry, painting, mechanical, plumbling, heating and air conditioning, grounds maintenance or custodial maintenance projects * Maintains swimming pool mechanical rooms, chemical controllers and all other operations for pools, assists other departments with projects related to but not limited to the above skills * Perform various tasks involving routine maintenance of electrical systems; maintain and repair lighting fixtures and switches; replace motors, switches, motion sensors, timers, photocells, fuses, thermostats, bulbs and ballasts * Performs various tasks involving routine maintenance of plumbing systems; install/repair plumbing fixtures and components; clear water lines, drains, and toilets; repair plumbing leaks; repair/replace faucets, traps, and disposals * As needed clean gutters, rods drain and sewer lines, provides fill-in for janitorial staff, work with Parks crews on various projects, lift heavy objects, loads and unload stone, gravel, dirt, salt, and heavy mechanical equipment * Assists in any work related to special events, building and facility maintenance, park maintenance, and construction * The employee will also work on some public works-related projects * As needed participates in the mowing of grass and weeds, may perform a variety of other manual tasks in connection with the maintenance and construction of parks, buildings, grounds, and any other Village facilities; maintains an awareness of proper safety procedures and guidelines and applies these in performing daily activities and tasks; and performs other duties as required * Operates snowplow and salt trucks, loads and unloads materials by hand if needed, or with the use of a front-end loader; * performs manual facility, pool, park, and special event work related to Parks, Buildings, and Grounds Department, Parks and Recreation, other Village Departments, community organizations, commissions, and groups * Must cooperate fully for all weather and department-related emergencies including call-outs as needed and scheduled overtime * Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Parks, Buildings and Grounds or his designee * There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday * Exposure to chemicals associated with building maintenance and operation of a pool facility; working near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles; working in all weather conditions; work with constant interruptions * The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, see, hear, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, and climb, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, perform repetitive motions, and repeatedly twist the upper body Benefits * Salary Range: This position is part of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement with a salary range of $26.57 to $32.96 |
