About the School of Biological Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology

Undergraduate degree programs include 4 year BS and 5 year BS/MS programs in Biology and Bioinformatics. Graduate degree programs include: MS and PhD in Biology, MS and PhD in Bioinformatics, MS and PhD in Computational Science and Engineering as well as PhD in Quantitative Biosciences, Ocean Sciences and Engineering, Applied Physiology, and Dual Degree Doctorate of Physical Therapy/ Doctor of Philosophy. Research strengths include: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Ecology, Evolution, Integrative Physiology, Microbial Dynamics and Infection, Neuroscience, Molecular and Cell Biology, Molecular Biomedical Sciences. The School is home to the two largest and most diverse undergraduate majors in the College of Sciences: Biology and Neuroscience. Faculty members in the School of Biological Sciences have the opportunity to work with students from all majors on campus.

Job Summary

Provide basic technical support services required for conducting tests and experiments in a school or research laboratory within the Institute. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: academic and research faculty, co-workers. This position typically will advise and counsel: NA. This position will supervise: NA.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Gather, compile and summarize data in conjunction with assigned scientific tests, experiments, etc

Job Duty 2 -
Collect and prepare samples for use in assigned tests

Job Duty 3 -
Prepare statistical analyses and maintain related records.

Job Duty 4 -
Operate various equipment used in research studies.

Job Duty 5 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Technical Diploma, Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience
One to two years of job related experience

Preferred Qualifications

The position requires a bachelors degree, preferably in neuroscience, physiology, biology, or related fields. Experience working with rodents, basic laboratory equipment, generating and maintaining databases is preferred.

The Laboratory for Sensory-Motor Integration (https://sites.gatech.edu/cope-lab/) led by Dr. Timothy Cope in the School of Biological Sciences and Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Georgia Institute of Technology is searching for a Research Technician I. The laboratorys research interests center on properties of neurons and neural circuits that mediate somatosensory guidance of movement. Using methods in electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry/microscopy, biomechanics, and behavioral analyses, we study processes, mechanisms and behavioral impact of neural signaling by motor and sensory neurons through circuits in the mammalian spinal cord.

Primary responsibilities will be to engage, variously, in experimental preparation and procedures of data collection, including animal (rodent) care and handling, surgical skills, tissue processing for gene analysis and/or immunohistochemistry and microscopy, data management. Preference will be given to applicants having experience/skills in some of the following areas: quantitative and statistical analyses, mechanical engineering, computer coding and/or modeling. A minimum 1-year commitment is required.
